What is the role of additives in the production process of powder coatings

Source: FounderDate: June 29, 2024; Browse:0

There are various colors and tools for coloring, which many people are aware of. Different colors are important for materials and workpieces, and additives are also important in the production process of powder coatings.

1. Compatibility between powder coating additives and resins

This is a priority issue to pay attention to when selecting additives. Additives must be stably stored in powder coatings for a long time in order to exert their expected effectiveness. So the commonly used additives should have good compatibility with resins such as epoxy, polyester, acrylic, etc. So usually, the method used to compare the compatibility between powder coating additives and resins is based on their structural similarity.

For example, the selection of leveling agents can be divided into two types: those with carriers and those without carriers. If E-12 is used as a carrier, it cannot be applied to the formula of pure polyester system. For example, the commonly used B68 chemical matting agent is only suitable for systems with epoxy, and when used in other systems, it not only loses its intended effect, but also has a negative impact on the coating film.

2. Adaptability of powder coating additives to production processes

During the formulation design of certain powder coating additives, due to strict production process conditions such as high temperature, low temperature, and high-speed shearing, the additives may decompose and evaporate, leading to formulation failure. Some pattern powder coating additives cannot be extruded together with the base material by an extruder, but can be added to the finished powder afterwards. Only in this way can their desired patterns be revealed, because during the extrusion melting process, the pattern additives have already reacted in advance, resulting in no patterns appearing during film formation.

The multifunctionality of 3 powder coating additives in powder coatings

Some powder coating additives not only play a primary role, but also have dual or multiple effects. Therefore, when designing the formula, it is necessary to consider comprehensively, such as adjusting the dosage or simplifying the formula.

For example, zinc oxide is a common chemical substance that can replace a portion of titanium dioxide as a white pigment. It also has a certain degree of conductivity and is used in situations that require anti-static or conductivity. It also has the function of shielding ultraviolet light, especially in the range of (240-380) μ m. Of course, it also has anti mold, antibacterial effects, and improves the coating performance of carboxyl group containing resins. Clearly, choosing an effective additive requires a thorough understanding of its various functions.

Powder coating additives have a certain impact on the performance of powder coatings, and after some necessary processes, it can be discovered how effective the additives are and whether the displayed effect is good.
